Main Module 4 Socio-technological systems Structure – Main Module 4 Module 1 Environmental systems I Module 2 Environmental systems II

Structure – Module 1 Module 1 Environmental systems I Lecture 1 Historical aspects of technology Lecture 2 Socio- technology Developed by ARIES

To introduce students to the evolution of technology in history, in particular after the Industrial Revolution. To provide basic knowledge about the inter-role played by science and technology and their impact on society evolution. Learning outcomes

Historical aspects of technology Difficulties as regards training material preparation: –There are relatively few books on the subject, comprehensive of all aspects of technology –There are many books treating single aspects of technology

Historical aspects of technology In my opinion, what is important is to convey that, at least until 19 th century, technology has driven science progress much more than vice versa.

Historical aspects of technology: historical survey The steam-engine Machine tools and their products Modern transport Building construction Coals and the metals New materials: coal-gas, petroleum and rubber Textiles The electrical industry Printing, photography and the cinema Nuclear power techniques Sociotechnology Society Groups structure in Society Macro-environment of society Sociotechnology and science Sociotechnology and communication Ethics and sociotechnology Industry and Sociotechnology Environment Socio-technology systems Sociotechnology challenges Cooperative strategies Media technology and society Consequences Subject oriented areas According to discussions with Prof. Theuerkauf, more details should be given about the steam engine

Compulsory Elective Lecture 1 Historical aspects of technology Historical aspects of technology: historical survey The steam-engine Machine tools and their products Modern transport Building construction Coals and the metals New materials: coal-gas, petroleum and rubber Textiles The electrical industry Printing, photography and the cinema Nuclear power techniques Sociotechnology Society Groups structure in Society Macro-environment of society Sociotechnology and science Sociotechnology and communication Ethics and sociotechnology Industry and Sociotechnology Environment Socio-technology systems Sociotechnology challenges Cooperative strategies Media technology and society Consequences Subject oriented areas
