Institute of Technology, Sligo Dept of Computing Networking Management Semester 4 Chapter 8.

What must we be able to do?  You must be able to maintain the network and keep it functioning at an acceptable level.  You must know how to troubleshoot problems when they arise.  Know when it is necessary to expand or change the networks configuration in order to meet the changing demands placed on it.

Basic Ideas Covered  Admin. Side of network management  Monitoring the network  Cost of a network

The Admin. Side  See the whole network as one unit, and not individual devices hooked together.

Institute of Technology, Sligo Dept of Computing Monitoring the Network

When monitoring the network;  Understand your responsibilities  Know what you must do to keep network operating smoothly

Cost of Network  What are the major costs in a network ?

What does this involve  Determining the cost and implementation  Cost of maintaining  Upgrading  Monitoring the network
