The students will analyze the reaction in the United States to the perceived threat of communism by describing some of the conflicts between labor and management after the war Announcement: Chapter 12 Test next Friday Drill: Examine the painting and caption on page 432 and answer the following: 1. The man standing beside Sacco and Vanzetti is Governor Fuller of Massachusetts. Why has the artist made Fuller so much smaller than the other two? 2. Do you think the artist feels more sympathy for Sacco and Vanzetti or for their accusers? Why?

Revolution Abroad and Reaction at Home A desire for “normalcy” Causes for “normalcy” 1. isolationism 2. nativism 3. political conservatism Russian Revolution Czar Nicholas abdicated on March 15, 1917 Communists took over in March 1919

The Red Scare in the United States 70,000 radicals joined the Communist party in the U.S. A. Mitchell Palmer combated communists Palmer Raids A. Mitchell Palmer appointed J. Edgar Hoover to the antiradical division of the Justice Department went after Communists, socialists, anarchists Sacco and Vanzetti 2 men accused of murdering a factory paymaster Both died in the electric chair Evidence was circumstantial-what does this mean? Klan rises again Attacked Blacks, Catholics, Jews, and other foreign born people Supported prohibition-why?

Could not strike during WWI 3,000 strikes in 1919 Boston Police Strike Strikers not hired back after Gov. Coolidge called in the National Guard “There is no right to strike against the public safety by anyone, anywhere, any time” The Steel Mill Strike labor leaders tied to communism Coal Miners’ Strike violated a court order, got a raise and nothing on hours or 5 day weeks

Union membership declined in part because 1. Immigrant workers were willing to work in poor conditions 2. Language barrier difficult to organize unions 3. Farmers now in the factory relied on themselves-rugged individualism 4. Most excluded African-Americans

Identify the outcomes of the three strikes below on pages Boston police 2. Steel mill 3. Coal miners
