Presentation transcript:

Introduction to genetics By the end of this lesson you will know a) that the nuclei of cells contain chromosomes which contain the genetic code for the cell b) that chromosomes are made of DNA c) that DNA can be extracted from plant and animal cells

Learning Outcomes You will know that chromosomes contain the genetic code for an organism and they are found in the nuclei of cells. You will know that chromosomes are made from DNA – deoxyribose nucleic acid. You will be able to extract DNA from plant cells by following a method given to you.

Passing on characteristics In all living things, characteristics are passed on in the chromosomes that offspring inherit from their parents. Chromosomes are found in the nuclei of cells

What is DNA? Chromosomes and their genes are made of a molecule called DNA. DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid. Each chromosome is a very long molecule of tightly coiled DNA. DNA molecules carry the code that controls what cells are made of and what they do.
