MICE: The International Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment Diagnostic Systems Tracker Cherenkov Detector Time of Flight Counters Calorimeter Terry Hart for the MICE Collaboration Description: hodoscopes segmented in perpendicular directions and transverse to beam direction Purpose: part of trigger, particle identification Status: 60 ps resolution achieved in test beam; assembly expected to complete by August, 2008 Description: 5 stations of scintillating fibers segmented in 3 views embedded in magnetic field Purpose: measure particle trajectory and momentum Status: Upstream tracker finished, downstream tracker almost finished; preparations for cosmic ray readout with latest readout and data acquisition underway Description: 2 containers of aerogel radiator with different indices of refraction (n = 1.07, 1.12). Purpose: Identify background pions in muon beam Status: taking data in MICE beam line Description: 1 layer of lead read out by scintillating fibers and 10 layers of scintillator read out by wavelength-shifting fibers Purpose: Identify background electrons in muon beam Status: designs finalized; prototypes under construction, scintillator/wavelength-shifting fiber detector prototype exposed to cosmic rays, test beam Single-µ beam ~200 MeV/c TOF 4 T Spectrometer Final PID: TOF Calorimeter Beamline PID: TOF Cherenkov Detectors Cooling Cell (~10%) β ┴ =5 – 45 cm, liquid H 2, RF MICE part of Neutrino Factory and Muon Collider R&D MICE will be the first muon cooling. demonstration MICE beamline includes diagnostic instruments - Measuring particle rates - Providing particle identification MICE cooling channel includes - Spectrometers measuring particle trajectories → beam emittance - Particle identification section + Time of flight counters + Calorimeter 5-station tracker Upstream tracker Cherenkov PMT Aerogel Container Cherenkov Counters in MICE Beam 1-layer lead detector Scintillator/wavelength-shifting fiber detector prototype Time of Flight assembly in magnetic shield Upstream Time of Flight counters lead layer with light guides 4 T Spectrometer GVA2 beam monitor CKOV 1a PMT1 CKOV 1a PMT2 CKOV 1a PMT3  seen in the Cherenkov Detector April 2 nd 2008 Cherenkov Detectors Identify Pions -CKOV A,B PMTs triggered by GVA MeV/c protons too slow to produce Cherenkov light -450 MeV/c pions produce Cherenkov light -8 PMTs of 2 Cherenkov detectors detect Cherenkov light in coincidence with GVA2 MICE Beamline MICE Cooling Channel and Detectors Dipole 1,2: Bending magnets selecting 450 MeV/c particles BC1, BC2: 16 channel checkerboard scintillating counters GVA1, GVA2: 20x20 cm 2 scintillators CKOVA, CKOVB: Cherenkov detectors to ID pions GVA 1,2 Time Differences Identify Pions -Particle time recorded by each GVA scintillator -Faster pions identified from slower protons by shorter time differences Beam Transport -Upstream Dipole 1 current set for transport of 450 MeV/c particles -Downstream Dipole 2 current scanned and GVA2 rate measured - GVA2 rate peak at Dipole 2 current of 170 A indicates transport of 450 MeV/c particles through MICE beamline Demonstrations of MICE Diagnostics Introduction CKOV A,B Dipole 1 Dipole 2
