 NIH and NIEHS  Grant Opportunities  NIH Grants Process - Important Changes Overview

NIH consists of 27 Institutes and Centers = Extramural only NEI NCI NHLBI NLMNINDS NIMH NIAMS NINR NCCAM CIT CC NHGRI NIA NIAAA NIAID NICHD NIDCD NIDCR NIDDK NIDA NIEHS OD NIGMSNCRR NIBIB NCMHD FIC CSR

NIEHS -- National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences Human health and human disease result from three interactive elements:  environmental factors  individual susceptibility  age The mission of the NIEHS is to reduce the burden of human illness and dysfunction from environmental causes by understanding each of these elements and how they interrelate.

Grant Mechanisms “R”: Research Project R01: Reseach Grant R03: Small Research Grants R15: AREA Grants R21: Exploratory/Developmental Grants R43: Small Business Innovation Research “P”: Multi-component projects P01: Program Projects P30 & P50: Center Grants “T”: Institutional Training T32: Institutional Training Grants T35: Short-term Training “F”: Individual Fellowships (NRSA) F30: MD/PhD Predoctoral Fellowship F31: Diversity Predoctoral Fellowship F32: Postdoctoral Fellowships “K”: Career Development K99/R00: Pathways to Independence Award K08: Mentored Clinical Scientist Develop Award K12: Institutional Career Develop Program Although there are many mechanisms, not all mechanisms are available at all Institutes under all circumstances.

Recommendation Contract an appropriate Program Administrator in an appropriate institute before submitting (and preferably before you finishing the writing) your application.

7 New Investigator vs Early Stage Investigator  New Investigator: has not yet been awarded a substantial, competing NIH research grant.  Early Stage Investigator (ESI): a New Investigator who has completed his or her terminal research degree or medical residency—whichever date is later—within the past 10 years and has not yet been awarded a substantial, competing NIH research.

New and Early Stage Investigators

 The award provides up to five years of support consisting of two phases: The initial award (K99) provides one to two years of mentored, postdoctoral support. The second phase (R00) provides up to three years of independent research support and is activated when the awardee accepts a full time tenure track (or equivalent) faculty position.  Applicants must be in postdoctoral positions  Both U.S. citizens and non-U.S. citizens are eligible. NIH Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00)

NIEHS Outstanding New Environmental Scientists (ONES) Goals of the ONES Program: Identify outstanding scientists who are in the early, formative stages of their careers and who intend to make a long term career commitment to research in the mission areas of the NIEHS Assist them in launching an innovative research program focusing on problems of environmental exposures and human biology, human pathophysiology and human disease.

To be qualified, applicants Must be ESI: < 10 years postdoctoral experience Must be Assistant, Research Assistant Professor, or equivalent, and must show evidence of independent productivity and facilities Must show a long-term commitment to Environmental Health Sciences research Must show strong departmental and institutional support for their career development ONES award would be first R01 Support NIEHS Outstanding New Environmental Scientists (ONES)

Provide R01 support Highly competitive review process Provide support for resource development and career enhancement, separate from research funding Can be used for training, sabbaticals, etc. Can be used as for resource development: equipment, staff, cohort development, etc. Unique Features of ONES awards NIEHS Outstanding New Environmental Scientists (ONES)

NIH Director’s New Innovator Award

2010 NIH Director's New Innovator Award Program  New investigators who have not yet obtained an NIH R01 or similar grant  Must have received a doctoral degree or completed a medical internship and residency within past 10 years (ESI)  Up to $1.5 million in direct costs over five years  Application period closes on October 27, 2009  NIH expects to make at least 33 awards in September

Purpose. The purpose of the ViCTER program is to foster transdisciplinary collaboration and promote translational research efforts between and among basic (technology and mechanism oriented), clinical (patient-oriented) and population- based researchers and other individuals with expertise relevant to environmental health who have come together in common interest around a particular environmental stressor(s) of interest. The ultimate goal of the Consortia Program is to accelerate the exchange of knowledge and resources among collaborators to improve human health in those areas where environmental factors are known or expected to influence the development or progression of disease. ViCTER: NIH Competitive Revision Awards for Creating Virtual Consortium for Translational/Transdisciplinary Environmental Research (R01)

Each virtual consortium will consist of: an NIEHS-funded researcher who will serve as the PI and overall coordinator of the consortia (lead applicant) two new collaborators The Competitive Revision application should include: one to two new specific aims for the current NIEHS-funded research project one to two specific aims from each of the new collaborators that will significantly expand the scope of the current project with the goal of making the research more transdisciplinary and translational in nature and stimulating synergy among the collaborators. Mechanism of Support. ViCTER utilize the NIH Competitive Revision Award mechanism to supplement current NIEHS-funded R01 awards. Unique Features of the ViCTER Program ViCTER: NIH Competitive Revision Awards for Creating Virtual Consortium for Translational/Transdisciplinary Environmental Research (R01)
