1. What Do Managers Do? What are the four interrelated functions of management? Define them

2. Planning What are the steps to developing a strategic plan? Explain the process of converting those plans to tactical and operational plans How important is it to develop and mission statement and identify core values? What is a SWOT Analysis and how does it work? Walk through the process of setting goals and objective Define contingency planning and crisis management

3. Organizing Explain levels of management and how managers are organized include the concepts of top, middle and first-line management What is organizational structure and how are specialization and departmentalization used to develop it? Discuss forms of divisional organization and how they are used Explain the use of organization charts and the concepts of chain of command and span of control

4. Directing Explain how managers direct others and motive them to achieve company goals Discuss the pros and cons of the following leadership styles- autocratic, democratic, laissez-faire Explain the difference between transactional and transformational leadership

5. Controlling Describe the process by which a manager monitors operations and assesses performance What are the five steps in the control process?

6. Managerial Skills Define and describe the six skills a manager needs to be successful Discuss the six-step approach to problem solving

Cases and Problems The class will divide into 4 groups: Groups 1 and 3 will complete the Learning on the Web section of chapter 6 Groups 2 and 4 will complete the Ethics angle section of chapter 6 Be prepared to discuss your answers in your groups in the next class session
