10 million people die each year from diseases that have available cures 1/3 of humanity does not have regular access to essential medicines, and in the poorest parts of Africa and Asia this figure rises to over 50%. During the 15 seconds it takes to read these sentences, 5 people have died from preventable causes. Only 10% of drug Research & Development dollars go towards research into 90% of the world’s health problems. The Global Access to Essential Medicines Gap atch?v=k-dCHll_RA0

UC San Diego’s total research expenditures for was $798 million. The National Science Foundation ranks UC San Diego 6th in the nation in federal R&D expenditures. The Milken Institute ranks UC San Diego 6th among the world’s leading universities in the strength of its biotechnology research publications and 8th in the number of biotech patents issued. Thomson Scientific ranks UC San Diego the 7th highest- impact research institution in the nation from , based on the citation impact of published research in science and the social sciences: 2nd in the nation in pharmacology, 4th in molecular biology and genetics, and 5th in the nation for clinical medicine.
