Dementia The term ‘dementia’ is used to describe a collection of symptoms, including a decline in memory, reasoning and communication skills, and a gradual loss of skills needed to carry out daily activities. Dementia can affect people of any age, but is most common in older people. One in six people over 80 One in 14 people over 65

Dementia Age, genetic, background, medical history and lifestyle Types Alzheimer’s disease Vascular dementia Fronto-temporal dementia Other rare forms of dementia

Prevalence

Prevalence of Young Onset Dementia

Populations Projections vs Estimates PCT registrant vs population resident NSTS (NHS Strategic Tracing Service) – NB not totally accurate

Projections 2003 and 2004 based projections Normally available for LA, regions and SHAs NOT PCTs

Projections Some PCTs are coterminous with LA Sandwell Solihull Walsall Others are split Birmingham – South, HoBT and BEN

So.... Method: Apply Dementia rates to PCT registrant populations = putative prevalence by PCT Extrapolate population projections to PCT registrant populations = putative prevalence projections

PCT Labels PCT 5y specific age bands 5y age band specific dementia prevalence
