Conclusions, planning and prospects Follow-up committee meeting 6 October, Leuven

Conclusions Development of a practical methodology requires intensive interaction with partners (science) and water managers (practice) Both study areas were not ideal to study ecological effects The effective influence of climate change remains uncertain. Uncertainty is omnipresent and an integral part of the decision making proces Limited data availability hampers the development as well as the validation of methods Integration of adaptive capacity and resilience of systems is not evident Integration of different effects in a decision support tool implies critical deliberations A basin wide assessment would allow to develop and test a flood management strategy in stead of a (combination of) measure(s)

Planning Finish the damage calculations for the scenarios considered Derive flood risks and avoided flood risks Evaluate the scenarios considered Development of a method to derive the necessary flood data to facilitate the assessment of ecological impacts on the basis of rough flood data Provide concrete guidance on how to derive weights for the scenario analysis with the extended CBA model Integrate the different methods, conclusions and recommendations into a comprehensive final report

Prospects Development of a detailed integral hydraulic model of the entire basin Improvement of hydraulic models for the simulation of high probability events Development of a module to provide detailed spatially explicit information on the frequency, timing, duration and depth of floods Develop an action plan on how to reduce uncertainty of the scenario evaluation with the extended CBA analysis and the various methods on which the evaluation is dependent Popularisation of the social impact assessment methodology by the determination of weights based on an extensive public consultation Popularisation of the extended CBA tool by the determination of a set of criterion weights that can be used in any assessment in Belgium
