GDG Overview “Presentation to SMI2G Brokerage Event 2014” Presentation delivered by: Paul Doherty Email: pdoherty@gdgeo.com

Overview  Irish Based Engineering Consultancy  Research Intensive SME (design, analysis, modelling)  Specialist subjects include: Risk Analysis, Numerical Modelling, Climate Change Effects, Natural Hazards  Excellent FP7 experience (several existing projects)  Strong focus on the infrastructure sector and consideration for climate change and extreme weather effects. Additional expertise in the maritime sector, such as jack-up vessel assessments

Overview Topics of interest in Horizon 2020 ‘Secure Societies’ 2014 DRS 7 – 2014: Crisis management topic 7: Crises and disaster resilience – operationalizing resilience concepts DRS 9 -2014-2015: Disaster Resilience & Climate Change topic 1: Science and innovation for adaptation to climate change: from assessing costs, risks and opportunities to demonstration of options and practices

DRS 7 – 2014: Crisis management topic 7 Coordinator: GDG Project Idea: Focus on both temporal and spatial risks of failure within complex networks and how resilience strategies can be implemented to minimise the cumulative impact of extreme events (natural or otherwise). There will be a focus on transport infrastructure. Expertise: This project will build on GDGs existing experience in FP7 projects “RAIN” and “INFRARISK” Status: A number of partners are already confirmed, proposal is underway Seeking Partners that can contribute to the following areas: (i)Relevant Case Studies for Implementation and Demonstrations Sites (ii)Network Asset Management (iii)Crisis Management Tools and Analysis (iv)Risk Software Development

DRS 9 – 2014: Disaster Resilience & Climate Change-1 Coordinator: GDG (Section b-research and innovation action) Project Idea: Develop a long-term planning strategy and associated decision support tool to quantify the impact of climate change on the functionality of EU infrastructure. This project will include the development of a cost-benefit analysis model that will allow the users to determine the economic impact of various climate change scenarios as well as the economic impact of implementing a proactive strategy to reduce the cumulative risk. Expertise: This project will build on GDGs existing experience in FP7 projects “RAIN” and “INFRARISK” Status: A number of partners are already confirmed, proposal is underway Seeking Partners that can contribute to the following areas: (i)Socio-Economic Modelling (ii)Climate Change Scenarios and Processes (iii)Cost-Benefit Analysis (iv)Multi-variant risk modelling (v)Decision Support Tool Software Development

Overview Topics of interest in Horizon 2020 ‘Secure Societies’ 2015 DRS 10 – 2014: Disaster Resilience & Climate Change topic 2: Natural Hazards: Towards risk reduction science and innovation plans DRS 11 – 2015: Disaster Resilience & Climate Change topic 3: Mitigating the impacts of climate change and natural hazards on cultural heritage sites, structures and artefacts. DRS 13 – 2015: Critical Infrastructure Protection topic 2: Demonstration activity on tools for adapting building and infrastructure standards and design methodologies in vulnerable locations in the case of natural catastrophes DRS 14 – 2015: Critical Infrastructure Protection topic 3: Critical Infrastructure resilience indicator - analysis and development of methods for assessing resilience DRS 15 - 2015: Critical Infrastructure Protection topic 4: Protecting potentially hazardous and sensitive sites/areas considering multi-sectorial dependencies
