The use of FRBR Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records in bibliotek.dk Paul B. Jensen

FRBR definitions WORK a distinct intellectual or artistic creation Expression intellectual or artistic realization of a work Manifestation physical embodiment of an expression of a work Item a single exemplar of a manifestation

bibliotek.dk English version:library.dk Free public access to the Danish Union Catalogue Contains records representing approx. 10 mill. editions (manifestations in FRBR terms) Includes: The Danish national bibliography all titles in public libraries and research libraries in Denmark End-user requests for items to be delivered at the local library

Adaptation of FRBR in bibliotek.dk The records in bibliotek.dk represents manifestations (AACR2/danMARC2). The aim is to present these records grouped according to the work they embody At one point our definition differs from FRBR: For practical reasons we consider expressions in differerent language to be different ’works’. You could also say that in this case we prefer grouping according to the expression of the work.

Implementing the work concept The work level display is based on matching and collocating manifestation records on- the fly This match is based on simple author and title data in normalized form From the work level you can expand to the manifestations, select one (or more) and make a request

Accomplishment A more user-friendly interface (as confirmed by a majority of test- users) A reduction of unnecessary inter-library loans, because it is easier to locate an edition to your local library (or libraries)

Challenges (read: problems) In principle a traditional aacr2/marc-record does not specify which bibliograhic information refers to work level and which to the expression/manifestation level Many bibliograhic items contains more than one work: Collected plays in one volume (fx Shakespeare) 3 novels in one volume 3 symphonies on one cd Etc.
