Pulling the Threads Together Paul Ayris UCL

The Bologna Process  Well-established at an academic and administrative level  Still unclear about roles and responsibilities…  Institutional autonomy versus compliance  Issues for libraries not yet identified  Can UNICA provide a framework for a Discussion Group linked to Bologna Lab. Co- Ordinators for European Universities?

Information Literacy  Clearly, a lot is happening across Europe  Who leads?  Academics?  The Library?  Are librarians proactive enough?  IL outcomes not being disseminated across Europe?  Debate not heard, e.g., in UK universities…  Good analysis of Bologna Process and IL  Benchmark for future discussion  Library voice in UNICA on IL needs to be heard

Scholarly Communication  Can UNICA sign the Berlin Declaration?  Organizing Committee will talk to UNICA President  US developments setting scene for funders, along with Wellcome Trust  But, at institutional level, Mandates sit in a process, and are not stand-alone  Open Access tools being developed  Require funding for sustainability  Some academics see libraries as teaching labs  Digital Curation not yet addressed for repositories

Scholarly Communication  Scholarly Communications revolution  Is anarchic  Identify your goals and choose quick wins  New focus on primary data will be welcomed by academics  Can UNICA make a response to the EU study?  EU recognition that status quo is not an option would be a major statement
