Understanding Words from Their Parts: Over in a Word Over is a part of a word that help you understand the meaning of the word. At the beginning of a word, over can mean “too much” or “more than is good” Example: - One great danger to oceans worldwide is overfishing. (You see that overfishing means “taking too many fish from the oceans”)

UNDERSTANDING WORDS THAT CAN BE MORE THAN ONE PART OF SPEECH A word might be both a noun and a verb. Often, the meaning is similar. Sometimes it’s different. Examples: - There aren’t enough police in this city. (In this sentence, police is a noun. It means people whose job is protecting the public.) - Governments have to police the oceans. (Here, police is a verb. It means to keep order in a place.)
