Comdev has been offered as a web-based Master course at Malmö University since From the outset, the concept was a rethinking of communication and development in the light of globalization, conducted through a combination of seminars and individual assessments and finally implemented in a Project Work, preferably although not necessarily in a developing country. Communication for Development

When the program started for the third year, in August 2002, a group of 15 international students were enrolled and English became the official language of instruction. Since then the number of international students has constantly increased. Over the last two years, the majority of participants have been of non- Scandinavian origin. Communication for Development

Recruitment 100% Scandinavian students 75% Scandinavian students 25% Non-Scandinavian students % Scandinavian students 60% Non-Scandinavian students (30% from developing countries) 2004 Communication for Development

Course curriculum Globalization and Communication (9 ECTS credits) Post-Colonial Perspectives (6 credits) Development Cooperation and Communication (7,5 credits) Culture and Media Analysis (7,5 credits) ICT and Development (7,5 credits) Project Work (22,5 credits) The Comdev program consists of six modules:

Pedagogy ComDev was designed for the web and its pedagogy is based on realizing the enormous learning potential of the Internet. Combination live seminars and online communication Joint time-line Process-oriented learning Group-dynamics, Peer reviews Transparency Open website, no Communication for Development

Week-end Seminars Six week-end seminars are held during the four semester program. Normally they take place in Malmö, but we intend to arrange at least one of the seminars elsewhere. Stockholm (January 2001) Sarajevo (December 2003) Gothenburg (February 2005) Istanbul (October 2005) Durban (November 2006) The seminars remain a corner-stone of the ComDev pedagogy For overseas students who cannot attend (all) the seminars in person, it is possible to follow them on-line. Communication for Development

For overseas students who cannot attend (all) the seminars in person, it is possible to follow them on-line by Live Lecture Live Lecture

Communication for Development Video conference Face-to-face communication is used as a supplement to live lecture and text chat, during on-line examinations and on-line guidance sessions.

Examination Assessment is made through a combination of group work and individual assignments. The individual assignments vary from traditional examination of the course literature to essays and academic papers. The final Project Work corresponds to the Master Thesis. K3 intends to bridge the gap between artistic and academic presentations. We welcome creative work as part of the assignments and we see form and content as intrinsically connected. However, artistic submissions must still meet the academic requirements, either integrated into work itself (essay, documentary etc.) or as a separate reflection upon applied theories and methods and chosen form. Communication for Development

Project Work The project work is the final examination of the masters program. It includes planning, implementation, and analysis of a study in the field(s) of media, globalization, and international development cooperation. The work can be linked to an existing development aid project of which media and communication form an integral part. Communication for Development

So far some 45 project works have been examined Communication for Development

Community At present there are more than seventy students studying on active ComDev courses. Some forty-five students have so far completed the course. Many of them are practicing their attained knowledge in the field Communication for Development Globala Tider is a combined web mag and archive, intended to serve as a community for former, present and future ComDev students and practitioners.
