EarthFirst! Are you tired of namby-pamby environmental groups? Are you tired of overpaid corporate environmentalists who suck up to bureaucrats and industry? Have you become disempowered by the reductionist approach of environmental professionals and scientists?

Preference for Direction Action The Ruckus Society! –Actions speak louder than words Julia Butterfly and the Luna Circle

How to Hang Yourself From an Urban Structure DISCLAIMER - this is a basic guideline for how to create the image of a hang man from a company sign (generally oil companies). Only an EXPERIENCED climber can comprehend and practice this form of direct action, and even then only with extensive training. Rock-climbers, mountaineers, and activists with the desire but not the experience DO NOT QUALIFY to try this activity. Only people who have years of urban, direct action, aid climbing should even consider training for this. You WILL get hurt if attempting this without proper training, setting the movement for social justice, environmental security and human rights back in the eyes of the world. Have respect for your fellow activists and the movement at large, by knowing your own limits.

When it comes to regulating the environmental and safety practices of business, do you think the federal government is doing enough, should it do more, or should it do less?

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Protecting the environment is so important that requirements and standards cannot be too high and continuing environmental improvements must be made regardless of the cost.

Currently, drilling for oil and natural gas is prohibited in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Do you approve or disapprove of the proposal to open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska for oil and natural gas drilling?

What do you think is more important: producing energy, or protecting the environment?

Have you ever seen, heard or read about the theory of global warming– that average temperatures are rising slowly and will continue to rise mainly because of the burning of coal, oil and other fuels? 85% have seen, heard or read in 2002 Do you believe the theory that increased carbon dioxide and other gases released into the atmosphere will, if unchecked, lead to global warming and an increase in average temperatures? 74% said yes in 2002 Do you approve or disapprove of the international agreements in Kyoto and Bonn which would require countries to limit their emissions of carbon monoxide and other greenhouse gasses? 73% approved in 2002

I’m going to read you a list of environmental problems. As I read each one, please tell me if you personally worry about this problem a great deal, a fair amount, only a little or not at all.

An international treaty calls on the US and other industrialized nations to cut back on their emissions from power plants and cars in order to reduce global warming, also known as the greenhouse effect. Some people say this would hurt the US economy, and is based on uncertain science. Others say this is needed to protect the environment, and could create new business opportunities. What’s your view? Do you think the US should or should not join this treaty requiring less emissions from US power plants and cars?

How would you rate the overall quality of the environment in this country today– excellent, good, only fair, or poor? 5% said excellent, 41% said good Right now, do you think the quality of the environment in the country as a whole is getting better or getting worse? 57% said getting worse With which one of these statements about the environment and the economy do you most agree? Protection of the environment should be given priority, even at the risk of curbing economic growth. OR, economic growth should be given priority, even if the environment suffers to some extent. 57% said protection of environment, 33% said economic growth

Since the first Earth Day was held 30 years ago, how much progress– if any– has been made toward solving environmental problems: major progress, minor progress, or no progress, or have environmental problems actually gotten worse?

Which one of the following do you think is the most important environmental problem facing the world today? Is it…

In general, how important are environmental issues in determining your vote for major political offices? Are a political candidate’s positions on environmental issues very important, somewhat important, not too important, or not at all important in determining your vote?
