Sustainability at UCSB Campus Built Environment Highlights: New Construction  Marine Science Research Building (LEED certified)  Students Resource Building (pending LEED gold)  Future LEED projects: Ocean Science Education Building (plans for LEED Gold. Education, Social Science Building (planned LEED Silver)

Sustainability at UCSB Campus Built Environment Highlights: Existing Buildings UCSB joined the USGBC’s Portfolio Program. Will certify 25 buildings over the next 5 years. That’s over 2.1 million sq ft. 23 LEED credits established on campus-wide basis! Streamlines LEED documentation for future buildings Year 1 buildings: North Hall, Bren Hall, Embarcadero Hall, Harold Frank Hall in process. Recreation Center is pending LEED silver

Sustainability at UCSB Campus Built Environment Highlights: Future Goals Newly constructed buildings should showcase sustainable design through a “building that teaches” approach Mandatory eco-charette in the pre-programming phase Design, construct, and operate buildings using a closed-loop process to eliminate waste

Sustainability at UCSB Campus Built Environment and Energy Buildings are responsible for 40% of US carbon emissions and 9% of total world emissions. Building natural gas and electricity use represent over 95% of UCSB’s carbon emissions. Energy use and green building are tightly linked. New buildings must beat Title 24 by 20%. LEED Existing Buildings must be at least 17% more efficient than average buildings of their type.

Sustainability at UCSB Campus Energy and Climate Change UCSB has taken a greenhouse gas emissions inventory since Goals to reach 2000 levels by 2010 and 1990 goals by % away from 2010 goals, need to account for future growth Total emissions have crept upwards since 2004 due to new lab buildings, but energy intensity has decreased. 31% Reduction

Sustainability at UCSB Campus Energy Future Goals By 2050, reduce fossil fuel usage by 80% using campus co-generation and waste heat and increase photovoltaic on campus to 7% of usage increase wind energy procurement to 20% of usage increase new green technology to 6% of usage

Sustainability at UCSB Campus Energy Conservation and Renewables Energy conservation remains our best option for lowering our carbon footprint. Allows UCSB to do more with limited resources UCSB is making strategic investments in alternative energy: Photovoltaics on Carillo, Bren, and soon on Rec Cen II Combined heat and power at Bio II Solar hot water at selected dorms; Rec Cen plans to install for pool Exploring on-site wind production as technology advances

Sustainability at UCSB Campus Energy Conservation Education UCSB maintains real-time energy data for many buildings on campus Energy.ucsb.edu has tons of useful information, annual report, etc LEED EB mandates energy reduction. Work to educate building occupants to help save energy Green Touch Screen could educate thousands
