Sustainability at UCSB Waterless Urinals at UCSB UCSB has about 70 waterless urinals installed Standard practice for all new buildings, renovations, and necessary replacement. Gradual retrofit for LEED Existing Buildings Each urinal saves 40,000 gallons per year Excellent maintenance record, excellent “customer satisfaction”. All custodians are trained in waterless urinal maintenance Hands-off, improved hygiene

Sustainability at UCSB Why water? Water conservation is often ignored. Energy receives the most attention because of high costs. Water is relatively cheap. Drought years, wildfires, rising costs, and rising demands remind us how important water is. Very energy intensive to move water to Southern California. Using waterless urinals saves about 25,000 kWh/ year-- About the same as 2 single-family houses

Sustainability at UCSB Why Campbell Hall and North Hall? Old buildings (built in early 1960s) have high water-consuming fixtures Very high use buildings High visibility and part of LEED Portfolio Program. Campbell is site of countless community-oriented events

Sustainability at UCSB Status of Project Campbell Hall is 100% complete and operational Have urinals for North Hall, in process of scheduling installation Water meters are purchased. Currently trying to schedule (requires water shut off)

Sustainability at UCSB Future Water Conservation Goals Continue to install efficient fixtures in new buildings Urinal retrofits as funding allows Expand retrofits to low-flow sinks and dual-flush toilets These retrofits play a small role in overall campus sustainability and water conservation
