This Powerpoint Show is narrated so make sure you have your sound turned “ON”.:

2 Degrees Available 1) Associate in Science (A.S) in Fire & Occupational Science –Designed specifically for the student who plans to transfer to a 4 year college. –Our programs plug directly into existing 4 year degree programs

2 Degrees Available Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S) in Fire Protection Technology –Designed specifically for the student who wants to directly enter into the work force. Awards 6 credits for EMT and up to 7 credits for completion of approved NYS OFPC courses. –Completion of this degree does not preclude the student from pursuing a baccalaureate degree.

All of our fire courses came from the National Emergency Management Institute recommended course list from the Fire & Emergency Service Higher Education (FESHE) committee.

FESHE established a list of courses for 2 & 4 year Fire Science degree programs which is intended to serve as a model for all Fire Science programs.

TOPICS

Associate's Curriculum A result of the 2000 FESHE conference was the development of the model fire science associates curriculum. The FESHE attendees identified six core associate-level courses in the model curriculum, including: –Building Construction for Fire Protection –Fire Behavior and Combustion –Fire Prevention –Fire Protection Hydraulics and Water Supply –Fire Protection Systems –Principles of Emergency Services

The non-core courses are: –Fire Administration I –Occupational Health and Safety –Legal Aspects of the Emergency Services –Hazardous Materials Chemistry –Strategy and Tactics –Fire Investigation I –Fire Investigation II

Common Questions Q: Which degree should I pursue? A: It is totally your decision; they both are great degrees. It depends on your plans after you complete the 2 year degree. If you plan to continue your education, then the A.S. is the best choice since it will allow you to become a full junior at another college. If you are sure you will not continue your education, then the A.A.S might be the best choice. But since both degrees are almost identical during the first two semesters, you have plenty of time to decide.

Common Questions Q: Do I have to attend full time? A: No, you can take as few or as many courses in any semester as you choose.

Common Questions Q: Can I take any course at any time? A: Some courses have pre-requisites that must be completed before you can enroll for that course.

Common Questions Q: What are the benefits of completing either of these degrees? A: The trend in today’s Fire Service is moving towards requiring specific college credits and/or degrees in order to be considered eligible to be hired as a firefighter or promoted. As an example, FDNY currently requires 30 credits to be hired as a firefighter, 60 to be promoted to Lt, 90 for Captain and 4 year degree to become a Chief. Other departments around NYS have varying requirements and some also provide a financial educational stipend to their personnel.

Common Questions Q: I’ve been out of school for quite a while now. Will I be able to get back into the books? A: This is certainly taken into consideration. Care has been exercised to develop the Fire Science programs to both meet college standards as well as to facilitate the students progress. Assignments, research papers and exams are all spaced out so as to avoid overloading the student at any given time. The college offers many forms of assistance for all students; everything from free peer tutoring to counseling and assistance in developing good studying habits, reading and writing skills as well as a session in how to use the library and it’s research abilities on the computer system. They virtually address every issue a student may have.

Common Questions Q: “Can I Do It?” Absolutely!! As an example, EMT is a college course.

DCC FIRE SCIENCE PROGRAMS Our goal is to tie the “book” and the “real world” together in a logical manner.
