Carbon Management Board 27 th May 2011 LIGHTING – External LEDs project CARBON MANAGEMENT BOARD – May 2011

Background We recently completed an audit of all external lighting on the South Kensington campus There are circa 1,354 lights (bulkhead, flood, halogen) From the total energy consumption measured, we know that based on current operational controls, they use 539,400 kWhr / annum. This represents 289,669 KgCO 2 (289.7 tonnes) / annum, costing £37,760 of electricity. Significant maintenance time is used replacing bulbs annually, which often have accessibility challenges.

Proposal Replace all external lighting with suitable alternative LED fittings. Reduce total energy consumption to 126,254 kWhrs / annum, saving 413,146 kWhrs. This represents 67,801 Kg CO 2 / annum, saving 221,868 Kg CO 2 (221.9 tonnes). LED lamps have 50,000hrs, lifetime rating, resulting in an expected replacement between 5 and 7 years. Reduced maintenance operative and recurrent costs are anticipated CARBON MANAGEMENT BOARD – May 2011
