1 Carbon Management Steering Board 7 th October 2011 Physics Laser – case study CARBON MANAGEMENT BOARD – October 2011

2 Initiative The Physics ‘Photonics department’ currently operates an Argon Ion Laser, which is essential to their research. Facilities Management provides significant cooling and environmental services to ensure the laser functions correctly The current laser consumes 60kW of power to generate 12W of light. A new Broadband MaiTai Laser has an integrated argon ion and Ti:sapphire system, suitable for the same research consumes 2kW of power and requires less cooling and environmental control CARBON MANAGEMENT BOARD – October 2011

3 Case study We are in the process of purchasing the new laser and will produce a ‘case study’ to demonstrate the benefits of upgrading and selecting energy efficient scientific instrumentation / equipment. We are currently obtaining real-time measurements of the existing equipment’s power consumption. Initial observations suggest a £7.5K annual electricity saving would generated (£112.5K over its expected lifetime) Further savings from reduced water cooling and plant replacement & maintenance will also result.
