MICE CM16, RAL, 11 Oct 2006V. Palladino Plans for MICE PI detectors & Shielding MICE CM16, RAL Oct 11, 2006 V. Palladino, Univ & INFN Napoli for the small PID team Bonesini, Chimenti, Cremaldi, Giannini, Graulich, Gregoire, Karazdov, Orestano, Sandstrom, Summers, Torun, Tortora, Tsenov, and more

MICE CM16, RAL, 11 Oct 2006V. Palladino PID Summary Talk at CM16 in Fermilab the picture Intense test beam activity in the summer (FNAL & Frascati) comforted the basic design of all detector components Upstream setup converging towards review (Thu & Fri ) TOF0, 2 planes 48*48 cm2 CKOV I TOFI, 2 planes supported by thin shield slab 42*42 cm2 seems enough, radii of holes accordingly thick shield slab, magnetically connected to small (“GG cage”) Downstream setup converging towards a consensual design push to much larger apertures quenched since CM15 thick shield slab, magnetically connected to small (“GG cage”) hole 25 to 30 cm radius, Rikard will say TOFII, 2 planes supported by thin shield slab hole 30 to 35 cm radius, Rikard will say detector 60*60 cm2 EMCal 1) Kloe light (KL) preshower plane 90*90 cm2 2) fully active scintillator catcher hole 100*100 cm2 or so Getting also close to finally simulate it all adequately very useful evening yesterday

MICE CM16, RAL, 11 Oct 2006V. Palladino fully Active Scintillator The new emerging layout as compact as possible active preshower Downnstream Up&Downnstream

MICE CM16, RAL, 11 Oct 2006V. Palladino Only TOF II (and I) within a cage EMCal completely outside ! Virostek wall unchanged

MICE CM16, RAL, 11 Oct 2006V. Palladino

MICE CM16, RAL, 11 Oct 2006V. Palladino Hamamatsu R4998

MICE CM16, RAL, 11 Oct 2006V. Palladino Oxford thanks to the “GG cage”

MICE CM16, RAL, 11 Oct 2006V. Palladino beautifully small fields ie zero, with additional local shield

MICE CM16, RAL, 11 Oct 2006V. Palladino Frascati test beam, in July

MICE CM16, RAL, 11 Oct 2006V. Palladino On line first comforting results

MICE CM16, RAL, 11 Oct 2006V. Palladino How about real time of flight?

MICE CM16, RAL, 11 Oct 2006V. Palladino This seems to be why, unfortunately ….. will cost us money ….. CFDs or ADCs

MICE CM16, RAL, 11 Oct 2006V. Palladino TOF 0 & I confirmed by Tom

MICE CM16, RAL, 11 Oct 2006V. Palladino CKOV I ready to review too

MICE CM16, RAL, 11 Oct 2006V. Palladino Light from Aerogels read from HARP/MICE tubes

MICE CM16, RAL, 11 Oct 2006V. Palladino CKOV I on its way to MICE hall

MICE CM16, RAL, 11 Oct 2006V. Palladino Downstream: TOF II more later 60*60 cm2

MICE CM16, RAL, 11 Oct 2006V. Palladino Downstream:baselines for EMCal Finally! To be optimized now

MICE CM16, RAL, 11 Oct 2006V. Palladino Frascati in July

MICE CM16, RAL, 11 Oct 2006V. Palladino EMCal test beam results

MICE CM16, RAL, 11 Oct 2006V. Palladino Test beam in G4MICE : in progress

MICE CM16, RAL, 11 Oct 2006V. Palladino good tagged as a lower priority

MICE CM16, RAL, 11 Oct 2006V. Palladino Only TOF II (and I) within a cage EMCal completely outside ! Virostek wall unchanged as compact as possible SW right behind KL

MICE CM16, RAL, 11 Oct 2006V. Palladino Connection to the “Virostek wall “

MICE CM16, RAL, 11 Oct 2006V. Palladino Mag fields can be lived with

MICE CM16, RAL, 11 Oct 2006V. Palladino Local shield can do it

MICE CM16, RAL, 11 Oct 2006V. Palladino a solution is at hand

MICE CM16, RAL, 11 Oct 2006V. Palladino

MICE CM16, RAL, 11 Oct 2006V. Palladino

MICE CM16, RAL, 11 Oct 2006V. Palladino Staging “philosophy” In the, likely, case that funding will be limited NO resources should be wasted with interim temporary solution 1 plane of TOF0 TOF I TOF II are the highest priority. Full aperture, cover entire phase space, √2 worse performance acceptable for quite a while Must deploy resources accordingly Second planes next priority, except for one counter (cross calibration) per station

MICE CM16, RAL, 11 Oct 2006V. Palladino CM16 may have finally brought us a consensual baseline also for the downstream setup Thanks to all those that helped clearing the picture A downstream review appears closer today Funding remains a serious threat Focus now on updating the TRD chapter G4MICE runs with proper geometry files and field maps
