Leeds for Life: What it is ‘An entitlement for all students which helps them integrate their academic and wider university experience and prepare for their future.’

Leeds for Life: Why we’re doing it Direct response to strategy map objectives under the ‘Inspire our Students’ theme To help students recognise the distinctiveness of their Leeds education To motivate and empower students to make the most of the opportunities provided within and outside their programme To increase the attractiveness of the University of Leeds to prospective students To encourage greater reflection by students on the skills and attributes they are developing from Year 1

Leeds for Life: Where we are Groups established, focusing on different aspects of the Leeds for Life experience Identification of and agreement on the skills and attributes which will define a Leeds graduate Co-ordination of the skills and attributes which are offered by co-curricular providers Launch of the Leeds for Life website for staff about the project Early stages of development of a web resource for students

Leeds for Life: Role of Directors of L&T We need your help to: Promote Leeds for Life within schools Encourage and engage academic and support colleagues in discussion about Leeds for Life Identify the opportunities for skills development within your school We don’t expect you to: Map all the skills and attributes against your programmes Have sole responsibility for integrating Leeds for Life in your school LEEDS UNIVERSITY NEEDS

Leeds for Life: Outputs for Sept ’08 By September 2008, phase 1 of the project will have: Identified opportunities available for all students on taught programmes both within and outside Schools Designed and built a web resource for students making explicit the opportunities and support available Developed and introduced a personal tutoring model which provides a minimum level of academic support to all taught students regardless of their discipline Reviewed and agreed a way forward on an electronic mechanism for capturing and sharing skills Provided examples of good practice on how to motivate and engage students to build an academic community from the start of Year 1

Leeds for Life: Online survey An online survey has been designed to: Help DoLTs identify opportunities provided at school level which will help students develop the skills and attributes which define a Leeds graduate Provide information for a web resource for students which will be available from September ’08 Process Online survey piloted in Law and Civil Engineering Will be circulated to all DoLTs on 18 th March Deadline for completion 30 th April

Leeds for Life: Next steps Agreeing and editing content for website Development of structure and branding for the website Pilot in School of Humanities to explore tools in VLE to capture and share skills development Review and implementation of a more consistent personal tutoring model within Schools Promotion of ‘Building an academic community within a discipline’ under the Leeds for Life badge for Sept ’08 induction
