Why Study Mathematics? In many fields (business, scientific, and social), you will find that your mathematical ability may limit your ability to progress in your field.

General Comments About Mathematics Mathematics is not a spectator sport! You must do it in order to achieve success.

Mathematics is like learning a new language; you must learn the terminology, notations, formulas, and the grammar (both verbal and written) to do be able to communicate it with other individuals.

For Freshmen The pace of the class is fast; so don’t get behind. The material that we cover in this class is equivalent to the material that you would cover in high school from September to June.

Since we meet for a total of 150 minutes a week, I can not cover all the material that you need to know in the lectures and recitations. I am here to guide you through the class.

It is up to you to read the textbook for the material that I can not cover in class. Read each section at least twice – Once before class – Once after class Read each section slowly and carefully Outline each section during the second reading

Warning about the Math 1160 Grade Your grade is mostly based on how well you can communicate (in writing) that you understand the mathematical concepts needed to solve the problems that are on the quizzes and tests. – Attending all classes does not guarantee a passing grade! – Doing well on the assignments does not guarantee a passing grade!
