Interest in Latin America U.S. decides there needs to be a canal in Central America Why? – Help with trade – National defense

Panama Canal Attempts to make a deal with Colombia who controlled Panama – Proposal rejected Panamanians revolt & the U.S. supports them & recognizes independence, in exchange – The U.S. gets to control, maintain, and govern the Panama Canal

Dollar Diplomacy U.S. used this policy to exert influence over Latin American countries – Invest $ and build factories in L.A. countries – If another country tried to interfere, U.S. would step in to “protect their interests” President Taft oversaw Dollar Diplomacy- anyone know where he’s from?
