Metaphor A comparison between unlike objects that does not use like or as. Tim had the tense, hungry look of an alley cat He was sly and dangerous Johnny Cade reminded me of a lost puppy that had been kicked too many times He was Meek and Dependent on the gang He had been beaten by his old man

Personification Giving human characteristics to nonhuman objects. There was a silent moment when everything held its breath. And even as the policemen's guns spit fire into the night, Dally raised the gun The guns spitting fire (bullets) OR A Metaphor-Guns are dragon breathing fire

HYPERBOLE Expresses an obvious exaggeration I couldn’t have gotten up to save my life Two Bit’s mom let him get away with murder

I was reminded of Jack London's books where the wolf pack waits in silence for one of two members to go down in a fight Also a metaphor I turned my head to look at him and in the moonlight he (Johnny) looked like some Greek god come to Earth Also a simile

Synecdoche The part represents the whole Cherry’s red corvette is a nice set of wheels Are only the wheels nice? All hands on deck Not only the hands, but the whole body comes on deck

What Kind of Figurative Language is it? Metaphor He’s young, wild, and free He is greasy like a car Also Hyperbole I swear, sometimes he (Soda) reminds me of a colt. A long-legged palomino colt He’s so greasy, he glides when he walks. He goes to the barber for an oil change, not a haircut (2)

What Kind of Figurative Language is it? It scraped my raw nerves like sandpaper! Johnny was scared of his own shadow Soda and Darry always got spruced up for a rumble Simile It irritated me Hyperbole He’s afraid of everything Metaphor They dressed-up Looked like a spruce tree

What Kind of Figurative Language is it? "Here!" Dally handed me a shirt about sixty-million sizes too big. (Darry) He's got eyes that are like two pieces of pale blue-green ice. (Pony) you've always got your nose in a book HYPERBOLE 60 million ??? SIMILE Maybe Hyperbole- Synecdoche Noses can’t read!!!!!

What Kind of Figurative Language is it? Johnny was white as a ghost and his eyes were wild looking like an animal in a trap! Southern gentlemen with big black eyes in blue jeans and T-shirts, Southern gentlemen crumpling under street lights. (2) Similes (2) White as a ghost Animal in a trap He was afraid Metaphor Also an Allusion

What Kind of Figurative Language is it? I was getting mad. I was having them enough to lose my head! I was sleepy and freezing to death. Glory, look at the kid. And the ground rushed up to meet me very suddenly. Hyperbole Personification

What Kind of Figurative Language is it? I guess I’d been watching too many Perry Mason (TV) shows Soda was fiddling with some dead grass Suddenly it was deathly quiet! Allusion Metaphor The grass was a violin Soda was using his fingers like playing a violin Hyperbole

We went to the concession stand and, as usual, there was a line a mile long Metaphor Tension growing like a plant Hyperbole Explode like a bomb It was Long, but not a mile long

What Kind of Figurative Language is it? It was like sitting on top of the World! Soda attracted girls like honey attracted flies Simile Hyperbole He was very sweet Handsome Girls loved him
