Arts Award and Summer Reading Challenge ‘Delivering Arts Award has been a very enjoyable and positive experience. Interacting with the children, listening to their ideas and seeing the end result of their work has been very inspiring. Being able to support the children in achieving their goals makes me feel I am doing something worthwhile.’ Linda Sammon, Hackney Library Services Did you know you can use the Record Breakers activity book for Arts Award Discover?

What is Arts Award?  Arts Award’s unique qualifications support children and young people aged up to 25 to develop as artists and arts leaders  Arts Award develops art form knowledge and understanding, creativity, leadership and communication skills  Arts Award embraces all interests and abilities  Arts Award is available at five levels, four accredited on the QCF and one introductory level  Arts Award Discover, the introductory level, is designed for ages 5 and above In England Arts Award is run by Trinity College London in association with Arts Council England working with 10 regional Bridge organisations

What do children do for Arts Award Discover?  Discover the arts all around them, at the library and at home  Take part in arts activities: this might include reading, storytelling, poetry, drawing, model making, drama, music, dancing... at the library or elsewhere  Find out about artists and their work: writers, poets, illustrators, singers, actors and creative people they know or meet through the Summer Reading Challenge  Share what they found out: with others taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge, staff and volunteers at the library and/or their friends and family  Create a record of what they have done, in any format: for the Summer Reading Challenge 2015 they can use the Record Breakers activity booklet or downloads

What do libraries do for Arts Award Discover?  To run Arts Award Discover a member of staff or a volunteer with experience of working with children needs to train as an Arts Award Discover and Explore advisertrain  Once trained, the adviser can register your library or library service as an Arts Award centre. This is free and advisers can work across your library sites  You can work in collaboration with an existing Arts Award centre, such as a local school, to deliver Arts Award. Find your local centres on the map at  Young volunteers can support you in delivering Arts Award Discover Young volunteers

Discover and Summer Reading Challenge 2015  2015 will be the third year that Arts Award Discover has been an option alongside the Summer Reading Challenge through the partnership between The Reading Agency and Trinity College London  If you have purchased the Record Breakers activity book this can be used as the arts log for children to collect evidence for Arts Award Discover. You can also download versions of the activity sheets activity sheets  Each child that completes Arts Award Discover is eligible for a certificate from Trinity College London at the discounted `large group’ rate of £1.25

Arts Award Discover & Summer Reading Challenge 2015  We hope that you will want to use the Record Breakers activity book to deliver Arts Award Discover!  However, you are not required to run Arts Award in order to use the activity book  You could use the activity book or downloads for Arts Award Discover outside the Summer Reading Challenge  If you have any questions about running Arts Award please contact the Arts Award helpdesk on or

Arts Award Supporter  If you’re not ready to run Arts Award at your library you can register as an Arts Award Supporter.  A Supporter is an organisation that offers activities and opportunities that children and young people doing Arts Award elsewhere can use.  Being a Supporter gives libraries a route to working in partnership with organisations delivering Arts Award, including schools and arts organisations.  You provide resources and activities that children and young people can use for Arts Award - books, reading groups, `meet the author’ events, performance or exhibition space - and the partner organisation takes responsibility for delivery of the award.  Find out more and register at  Becoming a Supporter is free

Useful resources  The Arts Award website tells you about the different levels, how to deliver it, what children and young people get out of it, and provides resources and case studies –  There is a dedicated page for libraries with news and links to case studies  The Arts Award Guide has information and costs for all levels of Arts Award  Find out about Artsbox the free digital space and app for children and young people at  Young people can find out what Arts Award involves and get ideas at
