Recommended levels of physical activity Exercise has many benefits. According to MayoClinic.com, it can help control weight, improve mood, reduce the risk of developing certain chronic diseases, and improve sleep. If you're leading a sedentary life, any amount of exercise will benefit you, even if it's just five to 10 minutes a day. If you have a specific goal in mind, however, you might need to work longer than just a few minutes. Minimum Recommendations The standard recommendation for exercise is at least 30 minutes a day on most days of the week, according to a number of health experts, including Medline Plus. Other experts, such as the World Health Organization, recommend the same but in less specific terms, such as exercising for a total of 150 minutes per week, no matter how those minutes are divided.
