Poll What is the one thing you most want to learn today? What map data is available from Digimap? How do I get the data from Digimap? What data formats work in ArcGIS? Any tips on using ArcGIS Other

What data is available? How do I use Data Download to get data for ArcGIS? What formats should I pick for using in ArcGIS? How do I load data into ArcGIS? How do I style my data? Tips: Projections Clipping smaller areas Merging tiles Resources Content

Digimap Home Page

What data is available from Digimap? OS – Full range of OS maps and data available including OS MasterMap and OS OpenData Historic – Detailed historic OS maps from s Geology – Onshore and offshore geological datasets Marine – Marine and coastal zone data Environment – Land cover and land use datasets All data can be used in ArcGIS in one form or another!

How do I download map data? Data Download – download OS and other mapping data for use in ArcGIS

Using Data Download Three steps: 1.Select area 2.Choose data 3.Add to basket - options to change format, version and layers

Data Download All available OS map data products in Data Download Download several map products in one order 6 categories of map data 3 steps to order map data

Data Download Click + or on category name to open and see available map data products: OS MasterMap – most detailed topographic mapping of GB, transport network map data Background Mapping – raster maps at range of scales, all in TIFF format Land and Height data – contours and Digital Terrain Models Vector data – range of scales and formats Boundary and Location data – administrative boundaries, postcode data, gazetteers Withdrawn datasets

Basket options Select version, format and layers in the basket. Options vary between map data products.

What formats should I use for ArcGIS? Shapefile – for vector if available File Geodatabase – for vector if available GML (for OS MasterMap and VML) – if needed TIFF – for raster ASC (for DTM)

Shape file availability Check the Information boxes. Every product in Vector Data category available in Shape format. The most up- to-date contours are also available as Shape.

What do Shape files look like? Remember to keep all constituent parts together - SHP, DBF, SHX, PRJ. Image of folder containing VectorMap Local shape files.

OS MasterMap Topography Recommend you take File Geodatabase for use in ArcGIS. Alternative: Take GML and convert to Shape or File Geodatabase using tools detailed in Help pages. Why would I convert GML? Can limit the actual feature types you import Can merge several orders together

Use Productivity Suite to process GML Creates a File Geodatabase Can select Feature Types to process Can process multiple Chunks and Multiple Orders Essential for ITN

Raster data formats TIFF Raster data (backdrop mapping) all supplied in TIFF image format Some TIFFs are supplied with a TFW file - a plain text World file World Files contain the geographic coordinates, scale and rotation of TIFF map. ASC DTM and Gridded Bathymetry data

Formats and conversion guidance

Download zip file contents Within each zip file: Folder for each map product Contents text file Citations text file You must extract the data from the zip file before using the data in ArcGIS: -Either use the Windows ‘built-in’ uncompress option “Extract All” available when you right click on the zip file -Or use software such as 7-Zip or WinZip to extract the data from the zip file.

Poll- Where do you get data? What sources do you use to get data for ArcGIS Select all that apply: Digimap Built-in Esri Basemaps or Esri Portal Data.Gov or other open portal Your own data Other source, please specify

Loading data into ArcGIS Use the Add Data button Select Folder Connections to add downloaded data

E.g. Adding 25K Raster Data - Select multiple files if you want. - Will automatically show files that can be loaded e.g. TIF files, Shapefiles, ASC or File Geodatabase - You might get a warning saying they have missing spatial reference information. - Ignore for now.

Displaying 25K Raster Data If data is not visible, Right Click on Layer and click Zoom to Layer. It will zoom to the extents of the selected map sheet.

Projections and Transformation in ArcGIS Need to think about, if: You are setting the Coordinate System on an existing dataset You are overlaying data with different coordinate systems You want to overlay Esri Basemap data with OS data

Set Spatial Reference in Arc Catalog Some data has no projection information to begin with.

Set Spatial Reference in Arc Catalog Define the Spatial reference in ArcGIS Select Layer Properties Click Edit next to Spatial Reference

Set Spatial Reference in Arc Catalog Select correct coordinate system. For British National Grid: select Projected > National Grids > Europe > British National Grid

Data in WGS 84 and OSGB 36 What if you want to overlay data or use the Esri Basemaps? Esri Basemap data is in WGS 85 OS data is in OSGB 36 Showing VectorMap Local overlaid on the Esri Imagery Basemap Errors of over 100m by default

By default, no datum shift used

Use OSTN02 or Petroleum Transformation Petroleum transformation accurate to +/- 5 m OSTN02 transformation is accurate to +/- 2 m OR

Data correctly transformed should overlay more accurately For more information see our Help pages at:

Styling vector data in ArcGIS Vector data (e.g. OS MasterMap, OS VectorMap Local) will not have the same appearance as it does in Digimap, when viewed in ArcGIS May want to consider styling the data to emphasise certain things on the map, or to try and match the OS cartographic style

Styling options In ArcGIS – do this in Symbology tab of map layer properties: Option: apply a layer or style file that contains styling information – find available files in Digimap Help pages. Data information pages for each product has a link to a Style File on it

Style files from Digimap Digimap provides style files for some vector data products Need to look on the product information page Find this via the Data Download Information box Can be downloaded from OS website Some products have the Symbology file in the download zip

Other sources of style files For OS MasterMap: Productivity Suite: – symbology files available with the software but must be used with data processed through Productivity Suite: InterpOSe: – provide a style file for ArcGIS with the InterpOSe installer – Must be used withdata processed through InterpOSe: These are data conversion tools often used with OS MasterMap – full details in the Format and Conversion tools page mentioned earlier.

Common Geoprocessing Tools Merge Mosaic Clip

Vector data – Merge tool Where your download area covers multiple tiles, possible to merge the tiles into one Image: OS Terrain contours in ArcMap, before merge (SE England)

Raster data – Mosaic tool

Clip tool Where tiles are provided in large sizes e.g. 100 x 100 km, possible to clip them to smaller area To use the clip tool, necessary to have a Shape file of the smaller area to use as the guide Image: Vector Map District clipped to smaller area in ArcMap

Poll What software do you use most often with geospatial data? A.ArcGIS B.QGIS or other open source software C.AutoCAD or other CAD software D.I don’t use any software E.Other

Example - Analyse flood risk in Carlisle Download some data

Select smaller area and save Add Streetview raster Add Open Rivers Select smaller area of Open Rivers – Save smaller area as new shapefile Change rivers symbol and label

Add and style OS MasterMap Add OS MasterMap – Style using layer files from Digimap help pages

Mosaic 4 DTM raster tiles and style Add Digital Terrain Model – Got 4 raster tiles – Use mosaic to new raster tool to combine the 4 – If we don’t combine, join will be obvious and it will make styling tricky – Apply a new colour ramp to the data

Recent OS OpenData additions OS Open Map Local – topography data, 1:10000 OS Open Rivers – watercourse name; watercourse type; direction of water flow – 1:15000 to 1:30000 OS Open Roads – Motorways, A roads, B road – 1:15000 to 1:30000 OS Open Names – comprehensive list of Great Britain’s place names, road names and numbers and postcodes combined into one product.

Future additions OS MasterMap – Building Heights in File Geodatabase format – Urban Paths (for use with ITN) – Sites layer in GML format. – Sites data enables you to: Locate all of the main points of access to key sites quickly and easily in emergency situations. Understand their proximity and exposure to risks such as crime and floods. Plan the routes of buses, refuse lorries and postal deliveries to meet the demand they generate. Understand in detail the potential impacts of planned works or events on important locations. Points of Interest – Points of Interest classifies 4 million places and real-world features in Great Britain by their use and function in a 3-tier hierarchy, also providing their postal address or location.
