DESIGN REVIEW TOPICS 2 PROJECT GOAL BACKGROUND INFORMATION PROJECT CONTEXT NEEDS AND SPECIFICATIONS RESULTS FROM PROJECT LEARNING DESIGN OPTIONS DESIGN FLOW CHART PROJECT BUDGET PROJECT SCHEDULE CONCLUSION

PROJECT GOAL 3 Automate the process of receiving information about a power line fault from relays and displaying the information and location on a map to assist in a quicker response time in repairing the fault.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION 4 ArcGIS – GIS: Geographic Information System - provides a framework for gathering and organizing spatial data and related information so that it can be displayed and analyzed Used by Idaho Power to display complete distribution system along with attributes about the individual pieces of that system; i.e. Power pole, substations, transmission lines, capacitor banks, etc.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION (CONT.) 5 SELocator – Developed by members of Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories Provided to us for use in this project Evaluates Event Files from the relays on the power lines and determines the location of the fault by telling the distance down the line from the relays that the fault occurred. (Usually uses 2 relays for calculations) Accuracy that is expected from this program is to show the fault at the nearest structure to the location of the fault.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION (CONT.) 6 The relays used on transmission lines create event reports when a power line fault occurs The type of fault and the location are necessary to send crew out to repair Previously users had to “call” the relays in order to get the event files from them and begin finding the location of the fault The method used previously would highlight the transmission line that the fault occurred out to an estimated distance where the fault was believed to occur Problems with previous method: Not automated, less accurate, doesn’t just show the location of the fault, takes more time to get all information needed

PROJECT CONTEXT 7 SELocator will be used to find the location information of the fault The program to be created will get the information and display an accurate estimate of the location of the fault on a map for the users to see in a quick manner Benefits: Information will automatically be collected and displayed, will get all necessary information quickly, more accurate results, repair crews will have a better response time

8

NEEDS AND SPECIFICATIONS 9 The system to be designed must: Automatically read output file from SELocator with fault information Take information from output file, parse the information and transfer to mapping program with location of fault shown Display fault symbol on map at nearest structure to the location of fault found from SELocator. Should use provided trace web service – code used before to take the information from event files and determine the latitude and longitude of fault.

NEEDS AND SPECIFICATIONS (CONT.) 10 Ability for user to choose default time out of fault symbol on map along with the ability for user to easily remove fault symbol manually when repaired Should show fault location within 1 minute of when fault was detected by relays

DESIGN FLOW CHART 11

PROJECT SCHEDULE (CONT.) 12 Goal for this semester is to complete a usable demo version of the program and have it running for 1 set of transmission lines Goal for next semester will be to begin to apply the program to more of the lines in the system
