Chapitre 6 More food and shopping

Les verbes Faire to make, to do Vouloir to want Pouvoir to be able to (can)

Faire – to make, to do Je fais Nous faisons Tu fais Vous faites Il fait Ils font Elle fait Elles font On fait Note: This is an irregular verb whose spellings must be memorized. This verb is used in expressions of weather. This verb is used in some idiomatic expression.(phrases that can not be translated word for word)

Weather expressions with Faire Il fait beau. It’s nice out. Il fait mauvais. It’s bad weather. Il fait du vent. It’s windy. Il fait froid. It’s cold out. Il fait chaud. It’s hot out. Il fait frais. It’s cool.

Idiomatic expressions with Faire Faire les courses to go shopping Faire le français to take French (or any language) Faire les devoirs to do homework Faire la cuisine to cook Faire un pique-nique to have a picnic

Vouloir – to want Je veux Nous voulons Tu veux Vous voulez Il veut Ils veulent Elle veut Elles veulent On veut Note: This is an irregular verb whose spelling must be memorized. Je voudrais is the polite form of je veux.

Pouvoir – to be able to (can) Je peux Nous pouvons Tu peux Vous pouvez Il peut Ils peuvent Elle peut Elles peuvent On peut Note: This is an irregular verb whose spelling must be memorized. In English it is often translated as can.

Using pouvoir & vouloir These 2 verbs are used when you want to say that you can or want to do something. Because of this, another verb usually follows pouvoir and vouloir. Since you can’t have 2 verbs conjugated next to each other, the first verb is conjugated and the second is in the infinitive. Ex. Je peux nager. I can swim. Je veux nager. I want to swim.

Negation with pouvoir & vouloir As always, the ne….pas format is used. Place the ne before the verb and the pas after the verb. With these 2 verbs, the ne…pas goes around pouvoir and vouloir and not the infinitive verb.
