Tapolca – the town of caves and waters, where the foundation works

Tapolca can be found on the northern shore of Lake Balaton, in the Tapolca Basin, which got its name after the town, and is surrounded by hills of volcanic origin.

The town has about inhabitants. It’s a regional centre of 52 settlements. Its history dates back to the ancient Roman times.

Viniculture, wine–producing and horticulture has always played an important role in its economical life.

The ‘Balaton Uplands’ National Park can be found on the territory of the subregion belonging to the town and its surroundings.

Water has always played an important role in the life of Tapolca. As a unique feature in Europe – a cave lake with healing climate stretches under the town

The Mill Pond is situated in the centre of the town, which is not only a beloved tourist destination, but also fulfils an important function in the town’s cultural life. A water-scene, constructed on the surface of the pond, functions as a spot for musical festivals and various cultural events.

Richness in mentality has always been characteristic of the town life. János Batsányi, a poet, was born in here (1763), and in his poem he was the first of the European intellectuals to greet the French Revolution. „Vigyázó szemetek Párizsra vessétek!” „Jetez un regard vigilant sur Paris!”
