Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was born in Thessaloniki in 1881.

He graduated from the Military School and joined the army as an officer.

He became the chief commander of the army during the War of Independence. ( )

He founded the modern Turkish Republic in 1923.

The Turkish Grand National Assembly elected him as the first president.

During this period the following reforms were constituted

1. Political Reforms

 Recognition of equal rights for women and men 2. Social Reforms  Reform of Headgear and Dress

3. Legal Reforms  Abolishment of the Canon Law  Transfer in to a secular law structure

4. Educational and cultural reforms  Adoption of the new Turkish alphabet

5. Economic Reforms

Atatürk died in 1938.His mausoleum is in Ankara, the capital city of Turkey.
