Erosion and Weathering in Dubai BY: Vanya 8AA

Erosion and Weathering in Dubai problems The major problem of Dubai due to weathering and erosion is its receding coastlines. Since Dubai is a major tourist center, erosion of beaches is a major concern for Dubai. The environment organization of Dubai has reported that the coast erodes at a rate of 50 Meters every 2 years. Erosion and weathering occur when there are heavy winds, strong waves and high rates of wave currents and the shamil seasons. Some beaches in Dubai have already moved several times to the edge of the city. The shamil season is a very dangerous period of time for the coasts of Dubai. The weathering is caused due to strong wave currents and strong winds which then hit the coastline and cause major erosion of coastlines.

THE SOLUTIONS Groynes/Sand bags: measure the erosion. Stop construction: Construction is also a big problem because in Dubai there are lots of islands (the world, palm jumirah) which have been build onshore so when the rocks are put on the sea the waves attack the artificial islands so the wave direction changes and this causes more erosion and weathering. Wave forecasting: wave forecasting is when we measure then real time wind direction, wave speed, wind speed, wave direction, air and water temperatures to monitor which areas are in most danger. This helps the engineers to know where exactly to put the groynes and etc. Satellite pictures: The satellite pictures help the GIS Centre of Dubai Municipality to measure the erosion so they can plan to cancel the future projects onshore and to plan to the shorelines.

My solution I think in a city like Dubai which has a more of technology, the best solution would be wave forecasting. This is because wave forecasting helps to know all of the possible things that cause erosion and weathering. Once the data is collected of the things such as: the real time wind direction, wave speed, wind speed, wave direction, air and water temperatures it helps the engineers to know where exactly to build or put things such as: groynes/sand bags and etc. I think wave forecasting is the best solution than other solutions because from wave forecasting you can get accurate results and as I said Dubai will not have any problem for this solution because it’s a very high technological city. Other solutions such as :like the stop construction this will hold Dubai’s future plans(The world) compared to if we use wave forecasting as a solution it will not affect the future plans and Dubai can build anything they want(onshore).

“In Umm Suqeim alone, 150,000 cubic metres of sand has been dumped and sand bags of between two and five tonnes will form groynes to protect and stabilise the beach.”
