Presentation 26: HIP RAFTER LAYOUT

Hip Rafter Layout Lines There are many layout lines on a hip rafter.

Hip Rafter Layout Lines These lines are added one line at a time. Click to start and watch the delay

Hip Layout for Ridge Draw ridge plumb line. This is not the cut line.

Hip Layout for Ridge Rafter must be shortened for the ridge. Usually 1 1/16″ Shortening = ½ the diagonal thickness of ridge. Draw a square line on the top with a center mark.

Hip Layout for Ridge Usually 3/4″ Side cuts are added for fit. Side cut = ½ the thickness of hip. Usually 1 1/16″ Usually 3/4″ Draw angled line over the top. Red lines are the cut lines.

Hip Rafter Length Unit Length x Run = Rafter Length

Hip Rafter Length If the building span is 24′, then the run is _____. 12 If the unit rise is 6″, the hip unit length is ______. 18″ The hip rafter line length is … 12 units of run x 18″ = 216″

Hip Rafter Length 216″ Rafter Length = Measured from first ridge plumb line.

Bird’s Mouth Layout Draw heel plumb line. 216″ Draw heel plumb line. Measure down equal to common rafter bird’s mouth height. Draw seat cut line.

Bird’s Mouth Layout Measure back along seat line ½ hip thickness. Measure down plumb to the bottom edge of rafter. Usually 3/4″

Bird’s Mouth Layout Measure back along seat line ½ hip thickness. Measure down plumb to the bottom edge of rafter. Same Raise seat line this distance. Usually 3/4″ Red lines are cut lines.

Hip Tail Layout Determine the location of hip fascia plumb line Either measure the run Or measure the length Measure down the plumb line same as the common rafter Draw level line Square over the top with a center mark

Hip Tail Layout Raise level line same as bird’s mouth seat line. Measure back from plumb line ½ hip thickness. Draw angled lines on top. Usually 3/4″ Red lines are cut lines. Usually 3/4″ Same

Conclusion Hip layout lines are added one at a time.
