Signage for Newark Purpose of the briefing:  To provide the background information, rationale and proposed delivery strategy for the new signage for Newark Objectives of the strategy:  Effective traffic management  Incorrect or outdated signage in and around Newark  National Civil War Centre opening in May 2015

Stages undertaken so far  Morgan Tucker appointed as Consultants in June Morgan Tucker are experts in this field and are currently undertaking similar work in other parts of the country  Initial Asset Survey undertaken and completed by Sept This included a review of existing Highway Signing, existing temporary signs, existing pedestrian signs, existing gateway treatments, existing tourist signs and existing private signs.  Consultation events undertaken in October Three events over two days at different times with fifteen people attending in total  Strategy developed following the consultation events and discussions with key stakeholders.  Briefing session and presentation to the Economic Development Committee on 21/1/15

Regulations etc  There are regulations relating to signs that have to be followed  It is important that what we agree will be value for money and therefore that the signs will not date too quickly or fade etc  There are approved makers of signs  Clutter and confusion in signage must be avoided  Account has been taken of the Augmented Reality Trail

Aspects considered & next steps  Highway Signage  Attractions Signage  Pedestrian Signage  Newark - Historic Civil War Town  All signs will, where possible replace existing signs and so use existing posts in approved settings.  The aim will be to de-clutter and to update obsolete and incorrect signs within current guidance  We propose to direct Tourists to the long stay car parks near to Newark Castle Station. Traffic management experience suggests that this will be the most effective route. Research into visitor behaviour also supports this approach.

Next Steps  That the pedestrian signs are updated and replaced with similar looking signs that are easier to maintain and replace by section if needed  That the twinning signs are retained, although there may be some inconsistencies which will be reviewed with appropriate organisations  The aim will be to complete as much as possible by early May 2015  Negotiations and organisation with the various agencies is now taking place  Temporary yellow signs will also be introduced to direct to National Civil War Centre for the opening
