Greet The Homeowner...

Greeting The Homeowner 1.Introduce yourself and present letter. 2.Ask permission to assess the property and invite homeowner to join you. 3.Fill out form. 4.Leave form and literature bag.

If The Homeowner Says No or Is Not Home 1.If the homeowner says no, thank them and leave politely. If the homeowner is not home, leave the Homeowner Evaluation form, literature bag and special note that states a Level 2 can be requested, on the mail box or most visible door.

Fill Out Development Information If the factor is present, circle the score. #s 1 and 5 will be the same for all homes in a development.

Access Circle the number if the condition exists. 1. # of Access Roads

2. Check main road width. Main road 30 ft

3 and 4. If the home is on a secondary road off the main entrance road, rate its characteristics. Secondary Road 30 ft

5. Look for street signs.

Site 6. At the driveway, look for a hydrant. If no hydrant, note other water sources.

7. Is the address visible from the road? 8. Is the driveway gated?

9. Is the driveway steep or rutted?

10 and 11. Is the driveway too narrow or clearance too low for emergency vehicles?

12. Is the driveway over 150 feet long, and if so, does it have an adequate turnaround?

For the remainder of the survey, concentrate on the area within 30 feet of buildings.

19. Are there sheds or other buildings not attached to, but within 30 feet of the home? If so, expand your defensible space area to include these buildings.

20. Are there power lines on the property that are within the “fall zone” of trees? Could they hamper a fire truck’s access to the back of the home?

21. Is there outdoor burning practiced on the property? Look for burning barrels, fire pits or other signs of burning.

Structural Hazards Rate the most vulnerable structure or part of the main structure within the 30 foot defensible space.

22. Does the building have a wood roof?

24. Are soffits enclosed? Remember to look at outbuildings too.

25. Are there any picture windows?

26. Is the foundation of the building open (can you crawl under the house) or closed with a block or cement basement?

27. Does the home have vinyl or wood siding?

28. Is there is an unskirted wood deck attached to a wood or vinyl sided building?
