What is JPSM? Graduate program at the University of Maryland “Joint” with the University of Michigan Masters & PhD Unique and well respected program Survey Methodology

What is the Junior Fellows Program? 10 week summer program Weekly seminars on survey topics given by JPSM professors at UMD Weekly Field Visits to various statistical agencies Junior Fellows are paired with a statistical agency to intern at as the primary experience

Agencies National Agricultural Statistics Service Bureau of Economic Analysis National Center for Education Statistics National Center for Health Statistics Bureau of Justice Statistics Bureau of Labor Statistics Census Bureau

What did I do at Census? I worked on the Survey of Income and Program Participation’s Survey Management Team Summarized feedback from Field Representatives Tested the survey instrument Debugged SAS code for interview times Reviewed audit trails

Things to note Census is heavily involved in the data collection process and presentation of data Many other statistical agencies use data Census collects to do their analyses. The Census Bureau has opportunities for people in so many different fields – not just statistics

Overall I enjoyed the summer Maybe I would try to intern at a different agency if I could go back, though I would definitely work at Census again in the future I learned a lot about how the government conducts surveys and collects data The Census Bureau is a neat agency DC is a cool city to spend a summer in I met a lot of awesome people in the program
