Aim: Were the Articles of Confederation a good system for uniting the colonies? Do Now: What do you think the 3 most important things are in our government today?

LETS REVIEW According to the Declaration of Independence, the people have the right to alter or abolish a government if that government  1. is a limited monarchy  2. violates natural rights  3. becomes involved in entangling alliances  4. favors one religion over another

Articles of Confederation (1781-1789) Set of laws to govern the US Limited national government One house legislature No chief executive No judiciary States retain sovereignty

Successes Created United States of America Northwest Ordinance- created a model for admitting new states into the union

Weaknesses No control over interstate trade Legislature lacked power to collect taxes No executive to enforce laws No judiciary Unanimous vote of states needed to amend the Articles All states have one vote in the legislature A 9/13 majority required to pass laws

Shay’s Rebellion Wealthy merchants wanted loans repaid States were forced to tax people heavily to pay debt Massachusetts farmers protested

Effects of Shay’s Rebellion Forced a new stronger national government Needed to be able to collect taxes Raise an army Avoid civil unrest
