Mythology By- Edith Hamilton ~Brittnie Scott, Sydney Yeargain, and Tallia Cowell Period 4 Cordova July 29, 2013

Chaos First there was Chaos. He was lifeless. Chaos gave life to two children, Night and Erebus. Erebus was where death lingered. Aside from Chaos, Night, and Erebus the universe was equivalent to a black hole. Love was born and it created light with day and dark with night. Erebus and Night were later married and had three children. Allusion~ You could compare Chaos to the speck off of Horton Hears a Who. He has a purpose, but at the same time he's nothing.

Earth and Heaven were Created Due to love and light, Earth was created. Heaven and Earth aren't human beings, but they portray traits that human beings have. Love and light tried to teach Heaven and Earth to act like human beings. Mother Earth and Father Heaven had the first children that had similarities of life, Gaea and Ouranos. Allusion~ Genesis in the bible explains how the Earth was created.

Monsters Gaea and Ouranos were monsters that had the ability to shake the Earth. They were not really alive, they were more one with the Earth. Along with Gaea and Ouranos, there was the Cyclopes and the monster with one hundred hands and fifty heads. The titans were monsters as well. Titans were children of the Earth and Heaven. Heaven was a horrible father to the hundred hands and fifty heads because he imprisoned them within the Earth as they were born. Mother Heaven was so furious with Father Heaven for treating their children with such hatred that she looked upon their other children for help, but only Cronus was brave enough to come to her assistance. Cronus waited for his father to destroy him, and from his drops of blood, giants arose. In addition to the giants, the furies were born. The furies were the only ones who remained on Earth and the only reason they stayed was because sin still existed.

Zeus Cronus was the Lord of the universe and along side him was his sister-wife, Rhea. Cronus and Rhea had five children but Cronus swallowed all five because he was warned that one of his five children would take over his kingdom. When Rhea had Zeus, her sixth child, she successfully had him go to Crete and gave Cronus a stone in a swaddle. Cronus thought the stone was Zeus, so he swallowed it. Later on when Zeus was all grown up, along with his grandmother, Mother Earth, he made his father regurgitate his five brothers and sisters and the stone. This upset Cronus, so he took his titan brothers and fought Zeus and his five brothers and sisters and started a war that almost ended the universe. Zeus won the war due to releasing the hundred handed monsters and they fought under Zeus with their unearthly powers and also one of the grandsons of the titans, Prometheus, fought along side Zeus. Zeus punished his enemies, but his victory didn't last long.

Zeus continued.... Zeus was again tried to be over throned by Earth's new and last offspring, Typhon. Typhon was a flaming monster with one hundred heads, but Zeus got the better of him with his thunder and lightening. The last attempt to dethrone Zeus was when the Giants rebelled. The Giants were defeated because the gods were very powerful and had help from Hercules. Due to their defeat, the giants were forced to go down to Tartarus. From then on, Zeus and his brothers and sisters ruled Olympus with no disturbances of dethronement. Allusion~

Creation of Man After the world was ready for mankind, Epimetheus, the brother of Prometheus, was very careless and made the animals first giving them a better appearance and protective covering. Epimetheus, realized too late that he didn't leave any ideas for human appearances so he asked helped from his brother, Prometheus. Prometheus came to the rescue and made mankind in a superior way. He modeled the humans after the gods and then he went to Heaven, to the sun, and he lit a torch and brought the fire down for the protection of man. Another version of the story of the creation of man began with the gods. The gods created the first humans as the golden race. The golden race were god like. They lived with bountiful amounts of food. As they passed on their spirits remained as guardians of mankind. The second race they created was the silver race. The silver race was worse than the first and ended up killing each other off. The next race was the brass race. These men were awful and very violent. Following the brass race, was a race that was godlike heroes. Finally race is the one that is living on earth now, the iron race.

Women Zeus created women to get back at Prometheus for deceiving him. Prometheus had a soft side toward men and had men sacrifice fatty meat and keeping the delicious meat for themselves. Prometheus had Zeus choose between bones covered in fatty meat and a hide disguising the good meat with entrails. Zeus chose the fatty meat and was very disappointed but had to stay true to bis word. Seeking revenge, he created women to punish man and man's friend. All the gods gave gifts to the woman and named her Pandora, meaning “the gift of all”. Pandora got into trouble because of her general curiosity. The gods presented her with a gift of a box full of hurtful things. Pandora ended up opening it and releasing terrible things in the world.

Prometheus vs Zeus Even though Zeus owed Prometheus for backing him up against Cronus, Zeus bound Prometheus to a rock to question him about is future. Prometheus was the only man to know who the mother of Zeus's child who would try to overthrow him would be. Prometheus refused to tell Zeus and he stayed tied to the rock until later on released by Chiron. Chiron took Prometheus's place and Zeus was fine with it.

Flooding Zeus grew angry with mankind and called upon his brother for help. Zeus asked Poseidon to flood the earth. Hidden within a wooden chest was Deucalion and Pyrrha, safe from the water. Prometheus warned Deucalion about the flood and Zeus wasn't even upset when both Deucalion and his wife Pyrrha lived. Deucalion and Pyrrha were the only humans to survive. Both were told to bow your heads and throw bones over your body. Both did and as the bones and stones landed they formed into human shape creating Stone People. With this it created a race to move on from the damage of the flood.
