Iranian Marriage

Target students HLs of Persian 1.5 & 2 nd generation (Iranian or Afghans) Intermediate-high at college level

I. Objectives cultural objectives: gain deeper understanding of marriage customs in Iran Language objectives To learn the topic specific vocabulary Express their views on the topic of marriage To read and understand a text on the topic To interview their parents about their wedding To narrate in the past To compare and contrast

II. Assessment Formative: Homework Check for understanding Text to self connection Summative: Vocabulary quiz

III. Activities- Day 1 Pre-activity (10 m) students receive 5-6 general questions about the upcoming topic and discuss it in pairs then the teacher asks the pairs to share their answers with the class vocabulary building (10 m- sample list in the following slide ) teacher writes the related vocabularies the students use in their answers and the unknown vocabularies they ask on the board and the students take notes

III. Activities- Day 1, Cont. Watching a short clip about /sofreh aqd/ twice (4:15-5:00) Describe /sofreh aqd/ and list the items on it Post viewing: teacher goes through the answers and provides input (watch the clip again, if needed in order to finish the item listing task)(10 m)

Activities- Day 2 Show and tell their homework to the class Reading text: invitation for wedding (sample in the next slide) Answering comprehension questions on the text Mixed group activity: watching a short clip about ceremony twice (5:15-7:15) HL: Describe the ceremony and customs L2: fill in the blanks with the proper verbs

III. Day 2, Cont. to write 6 questions in the target language to interview parents addressing the following topics:(15 m) Courting Wedding Post-wedding Homework: interview their parents using the questions worked on in class

Activities- Day 3 Pair activity: Report the homework to each other, then a few students report to the class Draw points out of the homework to explain wedding customs such as: /xastegari/ asking for bride’s hand /bale borun/ bride family’s consent /namzadi/ engagement /aqd/ wedding ceremony /arusi/ wedding reception

III. Day 3, Cont. Listening activity: students listen to an audio of a story of an Iranian grand-mother talking about her own traditional wedding customs Fill in the blank using words from the word bank Discussion: compare and contrast traditional vs. modern Iranian weddings Homework: write a paragraph comparing and contrasting Iranian and American weddings
