Scheme Development/1 Request from dairy industry to develop a QA scheme  Meet customer requirements  Credible sustainability criteria  Incorporate dairy hygiene requirements Technical Advisory Committee  July 2012 – December 2013  IFA, ICMSA, ICOS, Co-ops, DAFM, Teagasc, FSAI and Bord Bia

Scheme Development/2 INAB accreditation 3 rd December  Benchmarked against other similar schemes  Only internationally accredited national scheme  Accredited to ISO Sustainability accreditation from Carbon Trust  Model used to calculated Carbon Footprint SDAS officially launched on 11 th December

SDAS Standard Application process Scheme rules Auditable requirements Addressing non-compliance The sustainability criteria

Application Process Producer applies in writing  Agrees to access to DAFM AIM data, ICBF data and information from Milk Purchaser/Co-op  Agrees access to audit results be available to Milk Purchaser  Agrees Dairy Hygiene results available to DAFM  Agrees to become certified within 18 months Application generally through Co-op

Role of The Co-op Promote SDAS to their suppliers Help prepare suppliers for audit Assist producers in the close-out process Liaise with Bord Bia on specific issues Staff from all Co-ops have been trained in the standard (>80 staff from 28 Co-ops)

Scheme Details/1 20 sections in SDAS o Critical Requirements (7) - Relate to areas of high significance (food safety & traceability) Valid herd number, authorised remedies, approved animal proteins, approved feed suppliers, management of non ruminant feeds, sewage sludges prohibited, milk fit for human consumption in bulk tank

Scheme Details/2 o General Requirements (163) - Core best practice issues including milk hygiene issues Sustainability is included across the sections but doesn’t affect scoring One audit every 18 months (include BLQAS if requested)

Scoring/1 Critical Requirements - Yes or No If problem 48 hours to rectify General Requirements Full Compliance (Score = 2 ) Major NC (total non compliance) (Score = 0)  Close-out required  Dairy Co-op assistance advised Minor NC (partial compliance) (Score = 1)  Close-out can wait, but have to work with the Dairy Co-op to close

Scoring/2 To be certified must have  No critical non-compliances  Score of >60% with no major non-compliances Major non-compliances  Agreed timeframe  Evidence of close out on Bord Bia database Re-audit required where  Score <60%  Critical non-compliance

Close-Out Can be done independently or with assistance from Co- op Milk Advisor. Evidence must be logged to the Bord Bia database. Close-out action will require endorsement by Co-op Milk Advisor for a large number of requirements. Photographic evidence can be used for most non- compliance close-out. Reviewed by auditor who can accept or return.

Sustainability Second element of the audit is the Sustainability Survey. Increasingly becoming a more important focus for customers. “ Sustainability is becoming important enough for us to have appointed a director for it” – convenience food group “Sustainability is increasingly becoming a qualifying factor for choosing suppliers” – IF manufacturer “if presented with an identical offer by 2 suppliers, sustainability and something such as Origin Green could be the point that swings the purchasing decision” – clinical nutrition

Overview - Sustainability Information collected at audit. Not used in calculation of score. Information given to farmer only. Indicates farm performance in key areas relative to other Irish dairy farmers. Will be reported back to farmers in the CF letter.

Protect and Promote Many Irish dairy products have a premium status. Maintaining the position is an increasing challenge. We cannot compete on volume – must compete on quality. SDAS builds the sustainability profile of our dairy industry. SDAS provides proof of the high quality system in place.

Ireland has a Green Reality  This sets apart from our competitors.  No longer good enough to talk about it.  We need to measure, prove and verify.
