 Students receiving a grade of D or F in the core subjects  The counselor wanted to work with these 8 th grade students to develop better studying and planning behaviors before they entered high school

 Students  3 male 8 th grade students  Interventions  Participate in group focused on student success  Measurements 1. F grades were counted and compared before and after the eight week group 2. Pre and Post tests of the Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale  Settings  Counselor met with students in the Middle School Counselor office at Purdy Middle School

 Students were selected by having a D or F in one or more of their Core classes  Students met for 30 minutes during 7 th hour every Thursday or Wednesday starting on January 13, 2011  Counselor was available for additional support between sessions  Missouri Comprehensive Guidance Program

 Session 1- “Getting To Know You” Discussion of Group Norms and Confidentiality, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (Pre-Test), Attendance/Participation  Session 2- “Getting Your Act Together” Organization (Jenga), Group Norms, Confidentiality, Planner, Setting up a Planner with a Plan, Student Assignment Log *group norms and confidentially were discussed in each group

 Session 3- “Where Does the Time Go?” Group Norms (Student Signature), Pie of Life, How I Spend My Day, Planning My Week  Session 4- “Where Are We Now?” Group discussion-group half over, finish worksheets from session 3, brags from teachers/staff, planner  Session 5- “Checking Personal Study Habits?” Checking Out Your Personal Study Habits Survey, Planner

 Session 6-“Making the Most of Your Assignments” SQ3R, Good Working Habits Improvement, A Key to Improving Assignments  Session 7- “This is Only a Test” Becoming Test Wise, Planner, Group discussion- last group/ party plans  Session 8- “That’s a Wrap!” Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (Post-Test), Certificates of Group Completion, Group Discussion-Closing, Group Celebration

 NC had 4 D’s and F’s and went down to 3  LG stayed the same with 1 F  SR went from having 1 D to 2 F’s  NC’s self esteem stayed the same  LG’s self esteem went down 1 point, but nothing to be alarmed about  SR’s self esteem went up by 6 points

 Group should last longer  Complete the group earlier in the year so there are no chances of weather interference  Students said they liked the group  Students said it helped with their organizational skills, homework, and tests
