What SKILL Did Students Learn? Pre Post 22% could calculate a GPA 32% could identify appropriate study strategies 92% can calculate a GPA 85% could identify appropriate study strategies Hatching Results® (2010)

Pre-Post Test Results Hatching Results® (2010)

What do Students Believe? I Believe Doing Homework Is Important Hatching Results® (2010)

Homework Completion Rates Hatching Results® (2010)

From Trimester 1 – Trimester 2 Before Guidance Lessons 20xx GPA’ s increased from 2.2 to 2.25 After Guidance Lessons 20xx GPA’s increased from 2.1 to 2.4 Results Hatching Results® (2010)

GPA Growth From 20xx-20xx Hatching Results® (2010)

In Summary… Students receive valuable information about retention criteria Students gained knowledge, attitudes and skills needed for success Lessons appear to be contributing to students success Hatching Results® (2010)

Limitations and Lessons Learned Need to make sure we do not schedule lessons on minimum day Need to revise some questions (wording confusing for some students) Need to do pre-test before the lesson so we have more time Hatching Results® (2010)

Next Steps We have queried the data on students in danger of failing We are currently working in small groups and meeting with parents We will report to you the impact of that intervention. Hatching Results® (2010)

The school counseling program is contributing in a meaningful way to the academic achievement of all students. Thank you for your support of the school counseling program. Hatching Results® (2010)

The End Hatching Results® (2010)

XYZ Middle School School Counseling and Guidance Program Intentional Guidance (Results sample) Hatching Results® (2010)

Target Group All 6th, 7th and 8th grade students in danger of failing. Hatching Results® (2010)

Target Group selected on basis of following data: Students with a GPA below 1.3 on first Trimester report card. Hatching Results® (2010)

Why Intervene? Research says… Dropout and Retention - Grade retention was found to be the “single most powerful predictor” of school dropout. Students from low socioeconomic status families are twice as likely to dropout from school than students from average social class families, even when controlling for other factors. Rumberger, R. (1995) American Educational Research Association Hatching Results® (2010)

A National “On the Front Lines” Report on Drop Outs States…. Schools need to develop early warning systems to help them identify students at risk of dropping out and to develop the mechanisms that trigger appropriate supports for these students. By 9th grade, dropout can be predicted with 85 percent accuracy. The key indicators are poor attendance, behavioral problems, and course failure. -John M. Bridgeland, John J. DiIulio, Jr. and Robert Balfanz (page 8) Hatching Results® (2010)

In Summary… By dividing students into groups with specific needs, we were able to provide specific targeted interventions More students required interventions than we anticipated Every students received some type of intervention Students did improve overall Hatching Results® (2010)

Lessons Learned..Next Steps The smaller the number of students served, the greater the impact – need smaller group sizes Need to disaggregate data in advance to determine how many students are in need Large numbers of students at risk may mean we need to provide more prevention (get into classrooms earlier and teach study skills and motivational strategies) Look into impact of intervention on homework completion Hatching Results® (2010)

Thank you! Teachers who participated and supported Administration for consultation and support of the program Working together we are succeeding! Hatching Results® (2010)
