Aims: HERODOT II ( ) HERODOT II will: produce guidelines from TUNING and other research, to promote the role of Geography and the employability of geography graduates promote excellence in the teaching (and learning) of Geography and the training of geography academics and teachers by raising awareness, through research and publications recognise the key role to be played by Europe in support of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development and other international initiatives, as an integrated locus of training develop a framework for professional development of Geographers, through benchmarks and analysis of competences, leading to courses at postgraduate level build a valued and respected organisation

HERODOT II ( ) four new thematic pillars (TPs) with outputs: a Web site update and revision a series of European surveys and national reports on the continuing ‘state of Geography’ and the implementation of the Bologna Process an ongoing series of research-based publications (at least three) promotional materials including regular e- newsletters, leaflet and European best practice

HERODOT II ( ) four new thematic pillars (TPs) with outputs: guidance for the development of benchmarks to inform quality assurance under Bologna support for course and curriculum development networking conferences (3), workshops (6), research seminars (2) and other events guidelines, market report, development and business plan work with student organisations monitoring and evaluation reports of the project progress and outcomes

4 Thematic Pillars TP1: Citizenship, culture, place, identity Themes: Geography, meeting the needs of Europe. Geographical approaches to major European issues, linking research to teaching, aspects of Masters and PhD studies in Geography Activities: Seminars and publications, on the European dimension in Geography, support for course development linking research and learning/teaching.

Thematic Pillars TP2: Geography for 21st century Themes: Communicating Geography into Society, improve knowledge of Geography in society, including issues like disasters, hazards and geoinformation, global issues and citizens. Geography in a Sustainable Future Activities: Promotion, lobbying, ambassadorship of the discipline Information gathering on Global Education. Toolkit for Education for Sustainable Development in higher education

Thematic Pillars TP3: Innovation and Futures (NOW Teaching in Europe) Themes: Geography in a changing world (empowerment, governance, democracy decision making) - Sustainable Development; Globalisation, Environment, local issues linking to innovation and futures. Future learning/teaching approaches, course sharing, Activities: Contemporary case studies of excellence, good practice, a possible publication on Alternative Futures, geographical perspectives.

Thematic Pillars TP4: Lifelong learning and employability Themes: Exciting learning and teaching in Geography, enhancing the effectiveness of both formal and non-formal geographical education, seeking excellence in learning and teaching Activities: Seminars and publications e.g. GeoInformation, online learning, modern, unique and rare approaches, fieldwork, ongoing work with connected networks.

Network Summary well positioned to complete other activities, to include: work with other organisations to arrange joint events and collaborative projects, links with other sectors and beyond Europe ensure completion of a ‘needs’ survey exploring professional issues in the work of Geographers, how Geography is placed in the market a “Geography in Europe” book, with recommendations for curriculum delivery and best practise for 21st Century Geography providing professional services for partners
