They change depending on the noun that follows: au – goes before a masculine noun e.g. je vais au café – I am going to the café à la – goes before a feminine noun e.g. Je suis à la banque. – I am at the bank. à l – goes before a noun beginning with a vowel e.g. Ils sont à léglise. – They are in the church. aux – goes before a plural noun e.g. Nous allons aux magasins.- We are going to the shops.
