Comprehension Practice book pg. 161 transparency The theme of a story is the main idea or message the author wants to tell readers. Readers can discover the theme by looking at what the characters, in the story do and say. You can use practice book page 161 to help you write a summary. Remember to recall important ideas. A summary should include the characters, setting, problem, main events, and solution of the story.

Fluency Good readers pause at natural breaks in the sentences. This makes them feel more comfortable while reading aloud. It also allows them to read at a pace that is neither too fast nor too slow. Look at page 122. Track along as I read. Remember to always slightly pause at commas. Now let’s echo read.
