Measurement-A Common Language Density The measure of how much mass is contained in a given volume.
 Density is a measure of how much matter (objects that take up space) is compacted in an area.  What is the formula? Density = mass OR mass ÷ volume.
Which do you think would have the greater mass and greater volume? Why? 1 kg of rock 1 kg of feathers.
1. Which is more dense, water or wood? How do you know? 2. Which is more dense, 1 pound of lead or 100 pounds of lead? Wood, if it sinks in water. SAME!
Mass - the amount of matter in a substance -depends on the number and size of particles making up that substance -the same wherever it is measured Mass.

DENSITY  Is the measure of how much mass (matter) is packed into a given space.  Depends on:  Mass  Volume D = m/v (g/cm 3 ) D = m/v (g/cm 3 ) Mass.

Question 1 Which is heavier, balsa wood or pine? Answer: There is not enough information in this question for an answer. Certainly a ton of balsa wood is heavier than a few kilograms of pine. If it is meant which is heavier, balsa wood or an equal volume of pine, then the pine is heavier. Distinguish between weight (or mass) and volume.

Question 2 Which metals in the table will sink in mercury? Answer: Metals from osmium through uranium, except lead, will sink in mercury. Lead is less dense than mercury, so will float in mercury. We'll learn in Chapter 19 that objects denser than water will sink in water. Likewise for other materials.

Question 2 Which is denser, a gram of gold or a ton of gold? Answer: Both have the same density!
