Write it in Your Own Words

A paraphrase is... your own interpretation of essential information and ideas expressed by someone else, presented in a new form. one way (when accompanied by accurate documentation) to borrow from a source. a more detailed rewording than a summary, which focuses on a single main idea.

Paraphrasing is a valuable skill because... it is better than quoting information from a boring passage. it helps you control the temptation to quote too much. the mental process required for successful paraphrasing helps you to grasp the full meaning of the original.

6 Steps to Effective Paraphrasing Reread the original passage until you understand its full meaning. Set the original aside, and write your paraphrase on a note card. Jot down a few words below your paraphrase to remind you later how you think you might use this material. At the top of the page, write a key word or phrase to indicate the subject of your paraphrase.

6 Steps to Effective Paraphrasing cont… Check your notes with the original to make sure that your version accurately expresses all the essential information in a new form. Use quotation marks to identify any unique term or phraseology you have borrowed exactly from the source. Record the source (including the page) on your note card so that you can credit it easily if you decide to incorporate the material into your paper.

Paraphrasing Sentences Here are some sentences that have been paraphrased:

Original: Her life spanned years of incredible change for women. Paraphrase: Mary lived through an era of liberating reform for women.

Original: Giraffes like Acacia leaves and hay and they can consume 75 pounds of food a day. Paraphrase: A giraffe can eat up to 75 pounds of Acacia leaves and hay every day.

Original: Any trip to Italy should include a visit to Tuscany to sample their exquisite wines. Paraphrase: Be sure to include a Tuscan wine- tasting experience when visiting Italy.

Here is a summary of some of the changes made to a passage during the paraphrasing process: Early in the series = first season More threatened = greatest threat Closest friend and associate = one family member His mother colludes with his uncle = his mother and uncle are conspiring His kids click through Web sites = his children are surfing the Web
