2 Objectives: To review why source and note cards should be used as organizational tools for research To review the definition of plagiarism and methods for avoiding it To review content (items) to be added to source and note cards To locate appropriate online sites that assist with documenting sources according to MLA format

3 Why use source and note cards? To make research easier and assist with credibility issues by helping researcher stay organized To help researcher find sources again, if needed To identify sources of quotes and ideas give credit to sources and help researcher avoid plagiarism To create works cited/bibiliography

4 What is plagiarism, and how do I avoid it? According to Dictionary.com plagiarism is “an act or instance of using or closely imitating the language and thoughts of another author without authorization and the representation of that author’s work as one’s own, as by not crediting the original author.” "plagiarism." 5 How do I correctly use information from another author? Paraphrase/Summarize Dictionary.com defines paraphrase as “a restatement of a text or passage giving the meaning in another form…rewording. 6 Example of Paraphrasing from Dictionary.com Original: Her life spanned years of incredible change for women. Paraphrase: Mary lived through an era of liberating reform for women. Original: Giraffes like Acacia leaves and hay and they can consume 75 pounds of food a day. 7 Quotations Quotation marks should be used to show the author’s exact words. 8 What do I write on my source card? Write the source where interesting and relevant information was found. Click on card Write a source number in the upper right corner of the card and draw a square around it. 9 What do I write on note cards? Every source card should have corresponding note cards that each contain only 1 interesting fact or quote related to your topic. Remember, each idea should be summarized in your own words.
